SRL's are required to comply with practice directions. All the courts that I deal with require SRL's to copy the other party/party's lawyer in on all correspondence with Associates (no picking and choosing about what is/is not worth copying the other party in on).
Associates are very quick to point out to SRL's the error of their ways when they fail to copy in the other party/lawyer, and if I was a SRL I would prefer to save the embarrassment of being called out for not knowing the rules. Each to their own.
