If that's the case I wouldn't have left my kids for 2 years with someone who was that dangerous. Sounds more like revenge than protecting society. He should of reported it to police as soon as he was aware of it if it's that serious. You don't often get 20 years for murder. Drug trafficking maybe? And again, a good person wouldn't leave their kids with a drug trafficker. Perhaps the kids would be better off in care??
Well, he did say he didn't want to do anything about it for the sake of the children, so that doesn't sound like revenge being the most important motivator... I can imagine that sort of thing is a fairly complex ethical situation. Someone who has (for example) murdered someone or trafficked drugs isn't necessarily a threat to their own children, so the OP might be in a position where he's forced to choose the lesser of two evils etc. Anyway, this is all highly speculative and the reality is we don't know anything about the situation really, or even whether it's actually all true. Probably better off giving legal advice rather than moral advice.
I wasn't talking about the morality of things, I was talking about whether serious crimes having been committed automatically means the children are in danger - they're two very different things. I would have thought you were intelligent enough to recognise that. 
I'm certainly not saying I know for a fact the children are safe, I have no idea what has been going on with him and his ex and neither do you, nor could you know whether whatever serious crime she apparently committed would make her a danger to her children. Clearly that's a dilemma that the OP must wrestle with himself, unless he chooses to talk publicly about the details of the crime. I'm choosing to not speculate about things we do not know and keeping my mind open until we do.
