Hi,
During my studentship, I had a debt from my mobile phone bills and credit card bills in the UK which worth around GBP 3000. It is almost 2 years ago when I was an international student in England. As I am still a student in Australia, this money still can’t be repayable for me. But I have an intention to repay these bills once I get a full-time job. Just wondering, does this debt in the UK will affect my way in getting Permanent Residency in Australia?

Note: I already started to receive emails from a debt collector to contact and complete the payment. And, I did not reply to any of these emails.

Looking forward to your reply
Many thanks

Hey there! It’s a tricky situation, and the uncertainty around how past debts could affect your future is always unsettling. But, here’s the thing: while the debt from the UK won’t directly affect your PR application in Australia, ignoring the issue is a bad idea. I would foremost read about IR35 guide please start with that and check what payments you must settle first as a private contractor. Became if the collectors are reaching out, it’s a sign to at least address it—maybe not pay everything right away, but show your intent to settle the debt when possible. You don’t want this to snowball into something bigger. Plus, working out a payment plan might keep things in check, without dragging down your credit score or causing trouble in Australia. Keep the communication open and good luck!
