Hi,

I am planning on starting a private labelling and manufacturing business as a minor. This is an ecommerce business so what will happen is:

I will reach out to chinese suppliers and agents and work with them to manufacture the custom product with the brand name and logo and also any necessary labels that need to be on it(E.g Health label)
Batches of the product will be sent to a 3pl warehouse (E.g Startrack Australia Post)
Customers will buy the products and it will be shipped to their house.

I know I will have to buy a domain name for my brand. Will I have to buy anything else like a trademark from the get-go or can I save that for when I expand the business? Is there any other laws that I need to be aware of?
This is going to be a sole trader business at the start but if it grows It will be a pty ltd.

Well, depending on what you’re selling, there might be specific regulations you need to comply with, like health and safety standards. Starting as a sole trader is a good way to test the waters, and transitioning to a Pty Ltd when you grow makes sense.

When I started my own e-commerce business, I didn’t go straight for the trademark either. I waited until I saw some growth before locking that in, and it worked out fine. As for what you’ll need at the start, a domain name is definitely a must, but the trademark can probably wait until you expand. One thing you might want to look into is making sure your product labels meet local regulations, especially if you're dealing with health-related items. If you’re unsure about the legal stuff, you can always visit places that help with business setups. It’s good to be prepared, but you don’t have to go all in right away.
