My husband works for a plumbing company in Qld for 17 yrs, his employer has produced a set of company policies and as part have requested that if he has an accident and he is at fault then he must pay the vehicle insurance excess? Is this legal?

Can't say if legal or not as I am not a lawyer but from experience, the clause you mentioned is pretty common with employers. I used to work for companies with fleets and they way these vehicles have been used were not-good. Not all but many drivers simply do not take due care. Having said that, existing employees must accept new or changes in company policies. Don't think companies can't just force it on staff.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my query. I work in local govt and had not heard of clauses as this.
