My father recently passed and I am required to get a grant of probate due to the amount of assets to be transferred in the will. Our father had a sexual partner from the Philippines for four years who would come here for two months each year and received a monthly financial gift over the four years.

Can she contest the will? Would like to know before we try a DIY Probate.

Is there a will?
If so, who is the executor?

My suggestion?
Don't do a DIY.

There was a detailed will with value over $1.5m and my husband is executor. We were concerned about a lawyer taking a large amount of funds and % of estate value to do a probate. Can lawyers estimate this prior to commencement?

Yes, sometimes.

But understand that it will be an estimate, and probably not a quote.
(...and nobody can quote with any degree of reliability over the internet...)

It depends on the complexity of the individual will, and how the corpus of the estate is made up,
and how much needs to be done by the lawyer to assist the executor.

You can negotiate costs.
