Hello, 4 months ago my vehicle was in a collision. Ute was parking in car park and another car came round the bend in the same car park and smashed straight into my tail light. They then got out said sorry and took off. We waited incase they came back to get exchange of names, plates details etc. Due to almost no damage but a slightly bent back tail light we left it at that. A month or so later we got a call from the police station saying there was a report of a collision and failed to give details and was told I had to give my details over which I did and explained the other driver took off. We had no details and no evidence of any damage. 4 months later I have been contacted by lawyers stating they are coming after me for damages caused. I have no info on who they are the car or any damages. What do I do? Who was at fault and why did they take off after apologising?

Did you get a police report number? Have you followed up with Police regarding their outcome? Do you have witnesses to the original incident? Is the lawyer acting on behalf of an insurance company or individual?

I personally don’t think you have much to worry about.

No police report number. Will go in and make statement and acquire details. Just not sure if I need to get a lawyer. They are after confession to negligence.
Have posted on local groups for witnesses, nothing yet. Have visited local businesses for CCTV but nothing goes back that far.
The lawyer is acting on behalf of the person.

I personally wouldn’t be paying for a lawyer at this point. If you have the details of the officer you spoke to, I would speak to them and follow up. At the end of the day it will come down to your word against the other party.

Diary note everything, including the details of the original incident.

Do you have photos of the damage? Did you contact your insurance company?

How long did you stick around for after the incident? Can you show a ‘reasonable’ attempt to provide details?

If your tail light was damaged, they rear ended you. Which says to me they were at fault.
