My friend hit a rough spot and has gotten stuck here in Australia. She's now overstayed her visitor visa by about 8 months. She wants to get a Partner Visa in the future, but since its $6865 she won't be able to get the money for another year or so. We've both researched a ton and found out that hiring an immigration lawyer to help and will cost about $5000 which will take about another year to save up.

My question is, will an immigration lawyer be able to help? Is waiting and saving up worth it or is there a better option/plan that we're missing?

  1. Your friend should speak directly with a lawyer.
  2. It varies by lawyer. Many solo/small law firms are no different to any other small business operating for profit (and not charity). Some may offer flexible payment terms, etc.
