My cousin died in NSW late September 2018, without spouse/partner or children. Her parents died before her. Apparently efforts were made to locate family in NZ which were unsuccessful. I found out by chance that she had passed as I was looking for her email address/phone number to arrange a catch-up on my visit to Sydney for Easter.

My questions relate to disposal of assets -how soon/when should assets be sold? Her clothes, furniture and jewellery were sold at auction 5 months after she passed and before I knew she had died. Included in the jewellery sold were rings believed to be from my/our grandmother. Was the lawyer correct to sell these so soon? Do I have any rights with regard to this jewellery, given that items were not specified in her will.

Thanks for any advice in this matter.
