What happens to a persons belongings if they have no next of kin or a will, if they committed suicide? They don’t own property, live on govt. pension and are estranged from their blood relations?

Just because they are estranged from their relatives doesn't mean they don't have next of kin. Depending on which State you are in the Public Trustee (or equivalent in your state) will try to find next of kin to handover assets and belongings of the deceased. If the deceased died in possession of assets that need to be transferred then an application of administration of the estate will have to be filed so that the assets can be dealt with.
